Includes Philip Brown's 1868 U.S. Certificate of Citizenship, an 1877 San Francisco land deed for Philip Brown, and his wife, Kate, Philip Brown's 1888 patent for "Pin Rail Attachments for Ships," Philip Brown's 1891 Fireman's Insurance Company of Baltimore policy, a 1900 flier for George C. Brown's (Philip and Kate's son) campaign for California Assembly, the 1922 marriage license from Taft, Kern County, California between Thomas Perfield Brown and Mamie Louise Moore, and a 1942 photo and typewritten note about a house on Filbert Street, San Francisco, addressed to "Miss Brown and Capt."

Philip Brown was born in England in March 1836. He immigrated to the United States in 1860 and settled in San Francisco, California, where he worked as a stevedore. He was married to Katherine (Kate) M. Perry and they raised several children at their home at 228 Filbert Street in San Francisco.
